Simple Stability Exercises

 

Balance & Longevity: The 10-Second Stability Test

A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine evaluated nearly 2,000 adults ages 51–75 and found a strong association between balance and long-term health outcomes.

Participants were asked to stand on one leg for 10 seconds without support. Those who were unable to complete the test showed a significantly higher risk of mortality over the following seven years.

While balance naturally declines with age, it is also trainable. Targeted postural and stability exercises can improve neuromuscular control and functional resilience.

Simple Stability Exercises

• Stand on one leg while brushing your teeth (practice both sides).
• Walk heel-to-toe slowly across a room.
• Practice controlled balance movements such as Tai Chi.

Balance reflects coordination between the spine, nervous system, and musculoskeletal control. If you notice instability, structured evaluation may be appropriate.
